History & Highlights of SUPER MEET

1966 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
The first Meet as the "Nikkan Sports Athletic Night Games" was held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Nikkan Sports newspaper, the oldest sports paper in Japan. It was the first authentic track and field event held in Japan with the principal objective to appeal to the spectators.

1986 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
The event became known as the "Tokyo International Track and Field" marking the 40th anniversary of the paper.

1988 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
The name of the event changed to "SUPER MEET." This year was a grand event starring international athletes such as Carl Lewis and seventeen gold medalists from the previously held Seoul Olympics.

1991 SHIZUOKA KUSANAGI STADIUM
Sergey Bubka (this year former URS, present UKR) set a new outdoor world record of 6.07m in the men's pole vault. Seppo Raty (FIN) also set a new world record throwing 91.98m in the men's javelin throw. (This record was removed from the books due to the change of regulations in restricted modifications.)

1992 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
Once again pole vaulter S. Bubka marked a new world record of 6.13m in front of a crowd of sixty-thousand spectators. Jan Zelezny (this year former TCH, present CZE) broke his personal Barcelona Olympics gold winning record with a fine victory of 90.18m in the javelin throw.

1993 HAKATANOMORI STADIUM
The men's 100 meters gold, silver and bronze medalists of the World Championships in Athletics held in Stuttgart, Germany, all assembled in Japan. Linford Christie (GBR) once again swept to victory. The present women's high jump world record holder Stefka Kostadinova (BUL) won this year by marking a new world leading and Meet record of 2.05m.

1994 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
Men's 110m hurdles former world record holder Colin Jackson (GBR) won with this year's world leading record of 12.98 seconds. There was also a scene where long jump world record holder Mike Powell (USA) protested for thirty minutes against the foul judgment.

1995 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
The winners of this year's events: Michael Johnson (USA) in men's 200m; Hicham El Guerrouj (MAR) in men's 1,500m; Haile Gebrselassie (ETH) in men's 5,000m; Allen Johnson (USA) in men's 110m hurdles; Javier Sotomayor (CUB) in men's high jump; S. Bubka (UKR) in men's pole vault; Ivan Pedroso (CUB) in men's long jump; J. Zelezny (CZE) in men's javelin throw; Inha Babakova (UKR) in women's high jump.

1999 TOKYO NATIONAL STADIUM
Maurice Greene (USA) set the 100m world record in June and went on to conquer three gold medals in the sprint events at the World Championships in Athletics in Seville, Spain.
Greene won with a time of 10.35 seconds overwriting his bitter second place of the previous year.

2000 INTERNATIONAL STADIUM YOKOHAMA
This year the Meet was held six days prior to the Sydney Olympics with many top class athletes participating including triple jumper Jonathan Edwards (GBR). Women's triple jumper Tatyana Lebedeva (RUS) won with a new Meet and second ranking world record of 15.32m. Koji Murofushi (JPN) triumphed with his first victory in the men's hammer throw.

2001 INTERNATIONAL STADIUM YOKOHAMA
A commemorative race for the men's 400m was held for the retiring M. Johnson. A Swedish relay by the U.S. Team was scheduled, but due to the 9/11 attacks prior to the Meet many of the American athletes declined their entries. Thus a "World All-Star Team" was immediately arranged in honor of the great athlete's last race that marked the world best.

2004 INTERNATIONAL STADIUM YOKOHAMA
Many athletes from the Athens Olympics such as the 110m hurdler Liu Xiang (CHN) and high jumper Yelena Slesarenko (RUS) participated in this year's Meet. Japanese hammer thrower K. Murofushi won with a new Meet record. Here Murofushi finally received the gold medal from the Athens Olympics after the disqualification of the winner due to doping violation.

2006 INTERNATIONAL STADIUM YOKOHAMA
Yelena Isinbayeva (RUS) returned to vindicate her first no height ever in her career that happened at the previous 2005 Meet. She won with a new Meet record. The world record holder sprinter Asafa Powell (JAM) was determined to set a new record in the 100m when he was disqualified for an upsetting false start.

2007 INTERNATIONAL STADIUM YOKOHAMA
The world's top sprinters A. Powell and Tyson Gay (USA) lined up at the starting blocks. Just having won triple gold medals at the World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Gay the world's greatest sprinter raced 100m down the track to victory carefree of the blowing strong winds and the pouring rain.

2008 Todoroki Athletics Stadium
This year, the Meet was held at Todoroki Athletics Stadium Kawasaki City, Kanagawa. The overflowing audience cheered to the Last Run of Nobuharu Asahara's having end. The 400m relay bronze medalist of the Beijing Olympics, Asahara, Suetsugu, Tsukahara, Takahira, they participate in the MEN 100m and Asahara came in 3 rd place that became Japanese the top. The new heroine Fukushima Chisato won at WOMEN 100m and decorated the first victory as a Japanese. Usain Bolt , three Beijing Olympics short distance crowns also participates by a special guest.
